What is a Function Generator?

A function generator is a device that generates an electrical waveform (a voltage versus time waveform in an electrical circuit). It can generate periodic waveforms such as sine waves, square waves, triangular waves, ramp waves, and noise waves, and is often used for operation tests and characteristic analysis of electrical elements. Products that can generate arbitrary waveforms and three-phase signals are also available. Some models have functions such as trigger, gate oscillation, and sweep oscillation.

Application of Function Generator

Function generators are mainly used to investigate responsiveness when an electrical signal with a specific waveform is input to an electrical element or circuit. In most cases, it is used together with an oscilloscope, which is a device that measures, displays, and records electrical waveforms, and these are available in many university electrical laboratories and research institutes.
