What is a Tesla meter?

A tesla meter is a measuring instrument for measuring the magnetic flux (magnetic flux density) in space. Magnetic flux density is the magnetic flux that penetrates per unit area. It is created by the presence of magnetic poles or electric current. The Tesla meter uses the electrical characteristics of semiconductors called the Hall effect to display the magnitude of the magnetic flux density in units of Gauss (G) or Tesla (T). There are handy type and stationary type. Generally, the stationary type has higher accuracy and higher resolution (minimum resolution 0.1nT), and can measure even a strong magnetic field of several tens of T.

Application of Tesla meter

It is used not only for research and development / academic applications, but also for verifying the strength of magnetic fields in manufacturing and quality assurance. For example, the accelerator facility uses a powerful electromagnet (~ 10T), and a tesla meter is used for its measurement. Another application is the measurement of stagnant magnetism, leakage flux, or the characteristics of magnetic materials in product quality control. Although it is weaker, it is also frequently used for geomagnetic measurements because the earth also holds a magnetic field (~ nT). It is necessary to select an appropriate measuring instrument according to the magnitude and type of magnetic field to be measured, the required accuracy, and so on.
