What is a Strain gauge?
A strain gauge is a sensor used to measure the deformation or strain (stretching and compressing) of an object. When a material experiences external forces, minute deformations occur within the material. These deformations are measured with high accuracy using a strain gauge. The strain gauge is typically made from a metal foil or semiconductor material, and it calculates strain by measuring the change in electrical resistance. When strain is applied, the conductor in the strain gauge stretches or compresses, leading to a change in its electrical resistance. This change is measured with digital devices, allowing the estimation of the extent of deformation and stress. Strain gauges are used in a wide range of applications, such as measuring the stress on structures, mechanical testing, and vehicle weight measurement.
Application of Strain gauge
✅Stress Measurement of Structures
Strain gauges are installed on structures like bridges and buildings to measure stress and strain. This allows for real-time monitoring of the forces acting on the structure.
✅Mechanical Testing
Strain gauges are used on machine parts or components to measure the strain induced when a load is applied. This helps in assessing the material strength and durability.
✅Vehicle Weight Measurement
Strain gauges, combined with load cells, are used to measure the weight of vehicles accurately. This is particularly useful for measuring the weight of trucks.
✅Aircraft Testing
Strain gauges are attached to parts of an aircraft such as the wings and fuselage to measure the stress and strain during flight. This helps ensure the strength and safety of the aircraft.
