What is a Chlorophyll meter?
A chlorophyll meter is a device that estimates the concentration of chlorophyll in a simple and non-destructive manner. In modern agriculture, yield increase, environmental protection and cost reduction are important issues, and proper nitrogen fertilization is required for that purpose. In order to properly fertilize nitrogen, it is necessary to understand the nutritional status of the crop. Chlorophyll is a pigment responsible for photosynthesis in plants, and generally has the property of increasing as the nitrogen content increases, and the green color of the leaves also becomes darker. Therefore, it is possible to know the nutritional status of crops by measuring the chlorophyll concentration.
Application of Chlorophyll meter
The chlorophyll meter was developed in the "Soil & Plant Analyzer Development (SPAD)" for the field management of rice (paddy rice). The width of the leaf is 2 mm or more, and it is a fresh leaf with a thickness that can be sandwiched between the measuring parts. It can be measured if there is a transmitted light amount, so it can be used for all crops. There are a wide variety of measurable plants, including rice and other grains, cotton, vegetables and fruits, as well as foliage plants and green trees. Due to its portable size, it is used to directly measure the leaves of live crops in the field and to manage fertilization to improve quality and yield.
