What is a IO expander?
An IO Expander is an electronic component used to increase the number of I/O ports (Input/Output ports) on a microcontroller or processor. It is especially useful when the number of ports is limited or when many external connections are needed. IO expanders typically communicate with the microcontroller via communication protocols to provide additional I/O ports.
Features
✅I2C or SPI Communication: Many IO expanders use I2C or SPI (serial communication) to connect to a microcontroller, allowing control of many I/O ports with fewer pins.
✅Scalability: Multiple IO expanders can be connected via a single I2C or SPI bus, allowing for even more ports to be added.
✅Space Efficiency: By adding many I/O ports with minimal physical connections, they are especially useful in compact designs.
Application of IO expander
✅Sensor or Device Connections
IO expanders are used to control more devices or sensors in a microcontroller system.
✅LED or Switch Control
IO expanders can be used to control a large number of LEDs or switches.
✅Industrial Equipment
IO expanders are sometimes used in industrial equipment where many I/O ports are required.
