What is a Thyristor?
A thyristor is a semiconductor element with a rectifying effect. It is also called SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) or Silicon Controlled Rectifier. Rectification is the conversion of alternating current to direct current. A typical electronic component with rectifying action is a diode. The difference between a diode and a thyristor is the gate terminal. A thyristor has a terminal called a gate and exhibits rectification only when a current is passed through the gate terminal.
