What is a Laser microscope?
A laser microscope is a type of optical microscope that can observe a sample by scanning a laser beam with a light source. Generally, it often refers to those that use confocal optical systems. Sometimes called a confocal laser scanning microscope or CLSM. Since the confocal optical system can exclude light from the non-focal plane, it has a feature that the spatial resolution is high not only in the XY direction but also in the Z direction in particular. Therefore, if you acquire a 2D image with the Z axis shifted and then reconstruct it, you can acquire a 3D image or an omnifocal image.
Application of Laser microscope
Since it can perform non-contact measurement using laser light, it is used in the industrial field for inspection and measurement purposes such as three-dimensional shape observation and surface shape observation of semiconductors and electronic parts. In the field of life science, it is mostly used for fluorescence observation, and is used for observation of fluorescently labeled cultured cells and biological tissues. In addition, there are many methods that scan laser light, and in this case, it is possible to irradiate any area with light, so it is increasingly being used for local light stimulation in the field of optogenetics.
