What is a Steering?
Steering is a critical system in vehicles that allows the driver to control the direction of the car by turning the wheels. It plays a vital role in ensuring stability, comfort, and safety, incorporating various mechanisms and technologies to meet these demands.
Steering systems are primarily categorized into two types: Rack-and-Pinion and Recirculating Ball. Rack-and-Pinion steering is commonly used in passenger cars due to its simple structure and responsive handling. Recirculating Ball steering, on the other hand, is better suited for heavy-duty and commercial vehicles, offering high durability.
Modern vehicles have evolved beyond traditional mechanical steering systems to include electric and electronic systems like Electric Power Steering (EPS) and Steer-by-Wire technology. EPS assists the driver’s input using an electric motor, improving energy efficiency and enabling precise control. Steer-by-Wire eliminates mechanical connections, using electronic signals to transmit commands, allowing for greater design flexibility and enhanced safety.
Additionally, steering systems are equipped with components like steering angle sensors and torque sensors, which serve as foundational technologies for advanced safety systems such as lane-keeping assistance and autonomous driving. These features help reduce driver fatigue and enhance overall driving safety.
The steering system is not only fundamental for the basic function of turning the vehicle but also plays a crucial role in providing a comfortable driving experience and supporting advanced safety and automation features. As electrification and autonomous driving technologies continue to advance, steering systems are undergoing significant innovations.
