About Diode

A diode is a semiconductor device used in electrical circuits that allows current to flow in only one direction. Typically, a diode has two terminals called the anode and cathode. When a positive voltage is applied to the anode, the diode conducts and allows current to flow; however, when a positive voltage is applied to the cathode, no current flows through the diode. This characteristic makes diodes essential components for rectification, where alternating current (AC) is converted into direct current (DC). Diodes come in various types, such as silicon diodes, germanium diodes, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LEDs, in particular, are used for lighting, displays, and indicator lamps due to their light-emitting properties. Furthermore, diodes can be damaged by exceeding a certain reverse voltage, leading to "reverse breakdown," which causes failure. Consequently, diodes are designed with specifications such as maximum voltage ratings and operating temperature limits.
