What is a Cesium (Cs)?
Cesium (Cs) is an alkali metal with the atomic number 55. It is highly reactive and easily oxidizes when exposed to moisture in the air. In its pure form, cesium is a soft, silver-white metal that can be easily cut with a knife. It is found in nature primarily in the form of the mineral "pollucite" and other ores. Cesium has several industrial uses, particularly as a radiation source. Cesium-137 (Cs-137) is used in radiation therapy, radiation detectors, and the treatment of radioactive waste. Cesium compounds are also used in chemical analysis, optical devices, and atomic clocks. Due to its radioactive isotopes, cesium requires careful handling to avoid exposure to radiation, particularly in the case of Cs-137, which can pose environmental hazards in the event of nuclear accidents. Cesium is also used in high-precision timekeeping applications, with cesium atomic clocks playing a key role in GPS systems and communications.
