What is a Potassium thiocyanate (KSCN)?
Potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) is an inorganic compound composed of potassium (K) and thiocyanate ions (SCN⁻). It appears as colorless or white crystals and is highly soluble in water. Potassium thiocyanate is widely used in chemical analysis, particularly for the quantification of metal ions. It reacts with iron(III) ions to form a red complex, which is useful for iron determination. It is also used as a reagent in various inorganic and organic chemical reactions. Industrially, it is employed in dye synthesis, plastic and textile industries, and sometimes in fireworks and explosives. Though chemically stable, it can be hazardous if ingested or inhaled in high concentrations. Proper handling and protective equipment, such as gloves and goggles, are recommended.
