What is a Red phosphorus (chemical formula: P)?
Red phosphorus (chemical formula: P) is one of the allotropes of phosphorus, appearing as an amorphous, red-brown powder. Compared to white (or yellow) phosphorus, red phosphorus is more stable and does not ignite spontaneously in air, making it safer to handle. It is commonly used in the friction surface of safety matches, fireworks, insecticides, pesticides, and also in semiconductor applications.
Red phosphorus is flammable and can be converted to white phosphorus at high temperatures. It reacts with oxygen to form phosphoric compounds. Under certain conditions, it may react explosively, so caution is required during storage and handling. While it is less toxic than white phosphorus, inhalation and prolonged exposure should still be avoided.
