What is a Ammonium acetate (CH₃COONH₄)?
Ammonium acetate (CH₃COONH₄) is a white crystalline powder formed from a weak acid (acetic acid) and a weak base (ammonia). It is highly soluble in water and decomposes upon heating into acetic acid and ammonia gas. It is widely used in chemical analysis, reagent preparation, and as a buffer component. In HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography), it serves as a mobile phase buffer. In biochemistry, it is applied in DNA and protein purification. Industrially, ammonium acetate is used in textile dyeing processes and as a precursor for catalysts.
Thanks to its thermal decomposition properties, it also functions in dehydration reactions or when generating volatile organic compounds. While generally regarded as having low toxicity, protective equipment such as gloves and masks is recommended during handling, especially in powder form.
