What is a Cycloheximide?
Cycloheximide (C15H23NO4) is an antibiotic derived from the bacterium Streptomyces griseus. It functions primarily as an inhibitor of eukaryotic protein synthesis by blocking translation elongation at the 80S ribosome stage. Because of its potent activity, it is widely used in molecular and cell biology research. In cell culture, cycloheximide is used to study protein degradation, mRNA stability, and to transiently inhibit protein synthesis. It is also used in plant research, for instance in studies of auxin response mechanisms.
Due to its high toxicity to mammalian cells, including humans, cycloheximide is strictly limited to laboratory use and is not used clinically. Handling requires extreme care, with appropriate safety measures such as gloves and fume hoods.
