What is a Dimer Acid?
Dimer Acid is a type of long-chain dicarboxylic acid that is produced by chemically reacting unsaturated fatty acids, such as linoleic acid, at high temperatures to form a dimer. The resulting molecules typically have around 36 carbon atoms and feature branched or cyclic structures. Dimer acid is primarily used as a raw material in the production of polyamide resins and epoxy resin hardeners, and is widely applied in paints, adhesives, inks, and coatings. Its properties, such as enhanced weather resistance, flexibility, and adhesion, make it an important compound in industrial applications. Additionally, dimer acid has high hydrophobicity, which makes it suitable for applications requiring water resistance. Derived mostly from natural plant oils (e.g., soybean oil, castor oil), it is considered an environmentally friendly material. It is also used in cosmetics and personal care products as an emulsifier and flexibility-enhancing agent.
