What is a Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)?
Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) is a water-soluble, sulfated polysaccharide in sodium salt form. It carries strong negative charges and is widely used in biomedical research. DSS is best known for its role in inducing ulcerative colitis (UC) in mouse models by damaging the intestinal epithelium and triggering inflammation, making it a key agent in studies of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Additionally, DSS has antiviral and anticoagulant properties and is sometimes used in related biomedical research. Due to its cytotoxic effects, care must be taken when handling it. Various molecular weights are available depending on the intended application.
