What is a Trinitrotoluene (TNT)?
Trinitrotoluene (TNT) is a high explosive compound with the chemical formula C₇H₅N₃O₆. It is derived from toluene by the addition of three nitro groups (-NO₂). TNT is a pale yellow crystalline solid known for its strong explosive power and relative stability during handling. One of TNT’s key advantages is its low sensitivity to shock and friction, making it safer to store, transport, and use compared to many other explosives. It is extensively used in military munitions, demolition, and mining. TNT also serves as the standard measure for explosive energy, as in “TNT equivalent” used to compare the strength of explosions, including nuclear blasts or natural disasters. Despite its usefulness, TNT and its manufacturing byproducts are toxic and prolonged exposure may cause health issues such as liver damage or skin discoloration, necessitating strict safety regulations.
