What is a Pinacol?
Pinacol is an organic compound with the chemical formula (CH₃)₂C(OH)–C(OH)(CH₃)₂, also known as 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-butanediol. It is a type of diol (a molecule with two hydroxyl groups) and appears as a colorless crystalline solid that is soluble in water and alcohol. Pinacol is commonly synthesized through a "pinacol coupling reaction," where a ketone (e.g., acetone) is reduced using metallic sodium. In this process, two ketone molecules couple to form a compound with two adjacent hydroxyl groups.
In organic chemistry, pinacol is significant both as a synthetic intermediate and as a classic example for studying reaction mechanisms. One notable reaction is the "pinacol rearrangement," in which pinacol, when heated under acidic conditions, undergoes structural transformation into pinacolone, a corresponding ketone.
