What is a Bilirubin?
Bilirubin is a yellow pigment that forms as a byproduct of the breakdown of red blood cells. When hemoglobin from old or damaged red blood cells is broken down by macrophages, it eventually forms bilirubin, a natural metabolic product of the body. Bilirubin is transported to the liver, where it is converted into a water-soluble form (conjugated bilirubin) and excreted into the bile, which then enters the intestines. There, it contributes to the brown color of stool.
Elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood can cause jaundice, a condition in which the skin and the whites of the eyes appear yellow. This can result from liver dysfunction, bile duct obstruction, or in newborns due to immature liver function.
