What is a Heptane?
Heptane is a saturated hydrocarbon with the molecular formula C₇H₁₆. It exists in several isomeric forms, the most well-known being n-heptane, a straight-chain alkane. At room temperature, it is a colorless, highly volatile, and flammable liquid. It occurs naturally in petroleum and is typically obtained through petroleum distillation. n-Heptane is especially important as a reference substance in determining the octane rating of fuels, where it is assigned an octane value of 0. This scale helps evaluate a fuel’s resistance to engine knocking, with iso-octane (value of 100) used as the upper standard.
Heptane is also widely used as a non-polar solvent in paints, adhesives, extractions, and laboratory analysis. However, due to its high volatility and flammability, it must be handled with care, ensuring proper ventilation and avoiding ignition sources. Inhalation of vapors can affect the central nervous system, causing symptoms such as dizziness or nausea.
