What is a Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)?
Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble synthetic polymer derived by the hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate. It appears as a colorless, odorless solid or powder and has excellent solubility in water. PVA is known for its strong adhesive properties, emulsifying ability, and film-forming characteristics, making it useful in a wide range of applications such as paper treatment agents, textile sizing, adhesives, paints, and film materials. Water-soluble films made from PVA are used in packaging for detergents and pesticides and are recognized as environmentally friendly due to their biodegradability. PVA is also considered safe and non-toxic, which allows its use in pharmaceuticals, food packaging, and even in contact lens materials. It forms strong, heat-resistant films, but is susceptible to moisture, softening when it absorbs water, so moisture-proofing treatment may be required depending on the application.
