What is a Glycidyl Methacrylate?
Glycidyl methacrylate is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₆H₉NO₂, consisting of methacrylic acid and glycidyl (a derivative of glycine) linked together. This compound is primarily used in the synthesis of epoxy compounds and plays a key role in polymerization reactions. Glycidyl methacrylate contains an epoxy group, which makes it highly reactive and allows it to easily bond with other chemicals or polymers. As a result, it is utilized in the production of paints, adhesives, coatings, and also in medical applications and biomaterials. Furthermore, due to its high reactivity, glycidyl methacrylate is used in the modification of resins and the synthesis of polymers. Proper care is necessary when handling this compound, as it can be irritating to the skin and eyes, and the use of protective equipment is recommended.
