What is a Methyl methacrylate (MMA)?

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₅H₈O₂, and it is an ester derivative of methacrylic acid. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor and is primarily used in the production of plastics and acrylic resins. The most well-known use of methyl methacrylate is in the production of acrylic glass (PMMA). PMMA is transparent, lightweight, and impact-resistant, making it widely used in construction materials, optical devices, automotive parts, and more. Additionally, methyl methacrylate is utilized in adhesives, paints, coatings, and medical devices. During the polymerization reaction to create polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), methyl methacrylate is commonly used either alone or copolymerized with other monomers. When handling methyl methacrylate, proper ventilation is required as it is volatile and flammable, so care must be taken to avoid ignition sources.
