What is a Ammonium phosphate?
Ammonium phosphate is an inorganic salt formed from ammonium (NH₄⁺) and phosphate (PO₄³⁻) ions, primarily used as a fertilizer. It comes in two main forms: monoammonium phosphate (NH₄H₂PO₄) and diammonium phosphate ((NH₄)₂HPO₄). Both are highly water-soluble and supply essential nutrients—nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)—to plants. As fertilizers, ammonium phosphates promote root development and improve flowering and fruiting. Diammonium phosphate is especially popular due to its balanced release and effectiveness across many crops. It’s also used in hydroponics and soil enhancement.
Beyond agriculture, it's used as a fire retardant, in dry chemical fire extinguishers, and in industrial detergents. It decomposes upon heating to form a flame-suppressing barrier. Storage requires care to avoid moisture absorption and caking. Overuse can lead to environmental issues like water eutrophication.
