What is a Ultramarine?
Ultramarine is a deep, vivid blue pigment that has been used in art, crafts, and cosmetics since ancient times. The name "ultramarine" comes from the Latin ultramarinus, meaning "beyond the sea," referring to the origin of the pigment from lapis lazuli mined in Afghanistan. Natural ultramarine was once more valuable than gold. In the 19th century, synthetic ultramarine was developed in France, making the pigment more accessible. Chemically, synthetic ultramarine is an inorganic pigment composed of sodium sulfate, sulfur, and aluminum silicate, fired at high temperatures. It is known for its excellent stability, lightfastness, and non-toxicity. Today, it is used in paints, inks, plastics, cosmetics, and even laundry bluing agents.
Its rich, slightly purplish-blue hue conveys elegance and mystique, making it a popular choice in modern design and artwork.
