What is a Phosphorus trichloride (PCl₃)?
Phosphorus trichloride (PCl₃) is a colorless to pale yellow liquid composed of one phosphorus atom and three chlorine atoms. It has a pungent odor and is highly reactive with water, producing hydrogen chloride (HCl) and phosphorous acid. Because of this reactivity, it must be stored in sealed containers away from moisture. PCl₃ is widely used in organic synthesis and industrial processes as a precursor to pesticides, plasticizers, surfactants, and flame retardants. It's also a key reagent for synthesizing phosphoric acid esters, which are important in lubricants and additives.
Handling PCl₃ requires caution due to its toxicity and corrosiveness. Inhalation can cause severe respiratory irritation. Personal protective equipment, such as gloves, goggles, and respirators, should be used. It must be handled in well-ventilated areas under strict safety protocols.
