What is a Arsenic trioxide (As₂O₃)?
Arsenic trioxide (As₂O₃) is a highly toxic inorganic compound appearing as a white or colorless crystalline solid. Also known as arsenous oxide or white arsenic, it is odorless and soluble in water and acids. It is typically obtained as a byproduct during the smelting of arsenic-containing ores. Historically, it was widely used as a pesticide, wood preservative, and rodent poison. However, due to its toxicity, most of these uses have been discontinued. In medicine, under strict supervision, it is approved by the FDA to treat acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL).
Arsenic trioxide interferes with cellular enzymes by binding to proteins, leading to apoptosis (cell death), which helps suppress cancer cells. Industrially, it can also be used in specialized glass or semiconductors. Handling requires proper protective gear and careful monitoring due to its hazardous nature.
