What is a Lanthanum oxide (La₂O₃)?
Lanthanum oxide (La₂O₃) is a white or pale yellow powder and an important compound of the rare earth element lanthanum. It is hygroscopic and readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, gradually forming lanthanum hydroxide or carbonate. La₂O₃ is highly valued in the electronics industry due to its high dielectric constant and thermal stability. It is used as a gate dielectric material in semiconductors and in optical glasses to improve refractive index and UV absorption.
Other applications include its use as a catalyst or catalyst support, infrared absorber, magnetic material, and solid electrolyte in fuel cells. It is also explored in eco-friendly technologies such as renewable energy and hybrid systems. While relatively stable, La₂O₃ reacts with strong acids and requires careful handling to avoid exposure to humidity. Being a rare earth oxide, proper recycling and disposal are essential for environmental safety.
