What is a Copper nitrate?
Copper nitrate is an inorganic compound composed of copper and nitric acid, commonly found as copper(II) nitrate (Cu(NO₃)₂). It appears as blue-green crystals or blue powder, is highly soluble in water, and deliquescent—absorbing moisture from the air. It is used as an oxidizing agent and catalyst in chemical synthesis, and in the production of dyes, pigments, and fireworks (for blue color). It also serves as a common source of copper ions (Cu²⁺) in laboratories and analytical chemistry.
Due to its acidic and reactive nature, it should be handled with care. It can irritate the skin and eyes, so gloves and goggles are recommended. Inhalation of dust or vapors should be avoided, and work should be done in well-ventilated areas. It is harmful to aquatic life, so proper disposal following environmental regulations is necessary.
