What is a Magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂)?
Magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂) is an inorganic compound composed of magnesium and hydroxide ions. It appears as a white solid, either as powder or crystalline form, and is only slightly soluble in water, displaying alkaline properties. Magnesium hydroxide is used in a variety of industries, particularly in medicine and environmental applications. In medicine, magnesium hydroxide serves as an antacid to relieve symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn. It also acts as a laxative to treat constipation by retaining water in the intestines to ease bowel movements. In industrial applications, it is used in water treatment, neutralizing acids, and removing heavy metals from water. Additionally, it is used in the manufacturing of cement, plastics, and rubber.
Due to its low solubility and alkaline nature, magnesium hydroxide is relatively safe to handle, although excessive intake can cause side effects such as abdominal discomfort and diarrhea. It is also known to be used in fire suppression, as it can react with heat to prevent the spread of flames.
