What is a Charpy Impact Tester / Izod Impact Tester?
The Charpy impact test and the Izod impact test are testing methods used to measure the impact strength of materials, each evaluating different fracture properties.
In the Charpy impact test, the specimen is placed horizontally with a notch in the center and supported on both ends. A pendulum strikes the specimen, and the energy required to fracture it is measured, assessing the energy absorbed upon impact. This method, where the impact direction is perpendicular to the notch, is commonly used to evaluate notch sensitivity and material brittleness, particularly at low temperatures.
In contrast, the Izod impact test holds the specimen vertically, with a notch at the top. The impact direction is parallel to the notch, making it suitable for assessing material toughness and ductility. These tests complement each other as they assess different properties due to the variations in impact direction and notch placement.
In the Charpy impact test, the test specimen is supported at both ends, and a hammer strikes the center to measure the energy absorbed during fracture. The specimen usually has a notch, and the energy required to break it is used to assess the material’s toughness.
On the other hand, the Izod impact test involves striking a specimen that is fixed at one end, measuring the energy required to fracture it. Unlike the Charpy test, the Izod test uses a cantilever beam setup, and it is primarily used to evaluate the impact strength of plastic materials.
Both tests are widely utilized to assess the ability of structures or products to withstand impact, contributing to design and quality control.

Example of the Charpy Impact Test
The Charpy impact test is often used to assess structural materials that may face significant impact forces, such as automotive parts or steel used in bridges. For example, steel beams used in bridges in cold regions must remain tough at low temperatures to avoid brittleness. By conducting Charpy tests at low temperatures, engineers can determine if the material will perform reliably under real-world conditions.
Example of the Izod Impact Test
The Izod impact test is frequently applied to evaluate the impact resistance of plastic products, such as housings for electronic devices or consumer goods. For instance, smartphone cases and laptop exteriors need to withstand daily bumps and drops. The Izod test helps measure the toughness of these materials, ensuring they can provide protection against common impacts.
As seen in these examples, the Charpy test is commonly used for metals where brittleness may be a concern, while the Izod test is often chosen for plastics where toughness is critical.
