What is a Phototransistor?
A phototransistor is a semiconductor device that converts light into an electric current. It is similar to a standard transistor but has the added functionality of responding to light instead of an electrical input. Phototransistors combine the properties of a photodiode and a transistor, offering the ability to amplify electrical signals in response to light. They are primarily used in electronic circuits and systems that process light signals. For example, phototransistors are found in optical communications, optoisolators, infrared remote controls, scanners, and even automotive lighting control systems. When exposed to light, the base of the phototransistor helps current flow, and the amplified current flows through the collector terminal for processing in the circuit.
