What is a Synchronous motor?
A synchronous motor is a motor that rotates precisely in synchronization with the power supply frequency. In Japanese, it is called a synchronous motor. It is characterized by the fact that the magnetic fields of the rotor and stator are precisely synchronized and rotate at a constant speed. A synchronous motor rotates at a synchronous speed and has excellent constant speed because it hardly changes with the frequency of the power supply or fluctuations in the load. For example, with a 50Hz power supply, the synchronous speed of a 4-pole synchronous motor is 1,500 rpm. It also exhibits high efficiency in steady state. This is because it rotates at synchronous speed and has less mechanical loss depending on the rotation speed. It can improve energy efficiency and reduce power consumption. However, synchronous motors are more expensive to manufacture than general induction motors. In some cases, permanent magnets are used inside, and maintenance costs are high.
