What is a CBN grindstone?

CBN is an abbreviation for Cubic Boron Nitride (C = cubic structure, B = boron, N = nitrogen). Diamond is the hardest and most wear-resistant mineral on earth, but CBN is an artificial mineral with hardness and wear resistance next to diamond. Taking advantage of this characteristic of CBN, the grindstone used for grinding and polishing of machining of parts that require high precision, such as automobile parts, is called a CBN grindstone. Due to its high thermal conductivity, CBN is widely used in the processing of heat resistant steels, hardened alloy steels for machine parts, bearing steels, etc.

Application of CBN grindstone

In the case of diamond grindstones, high-hardness non-iron-based difficult-to-cut materials such as sapphire and silicon carbide can be easily processed, but diamond has low heat resistance and softens when it becomes hot during processing. Since the grindstone tends to get hot when processing iron-based metals, it can be said that the CBN grindstone with excellent heat resistance is more suitable. CBN grindstones are suitable for processing iron-based metals such as heat-resistant steel, which is often used in automobile engine parts, hardened alloy steel used as mechanical parts, and high-hardness bearing steel.
