What is a Ceramic oscillator?
A ceramic resonator is a type of electronic device, and is an electronic component that utilizes the phenomenon of vibrating ceramics (mainly lead zirconate titanate) vibrating at a specific frequency. Quartz is often used as a material for oscillators because it does not require adjustment and is excellent in stability, but it has the drawback of being expensive and bulky. Ceramic resonators are inexpensive and small in size, so they are used in many electronic devices.
The principle of ceramic resonators is based on the piezoelectric effect. The detailed operating principle is explained below.
1. Piezoelectric effect
Ceramic materials are capable of physical deformation and interconversion of electrical signals through the piezoelectric effect. The piezoelectric effect is a phenomenon in which when a mechanical force is applied to a material, the material undergoes minute deformation and at the same time generates an electric charge. Conversely, when a voltage is applied, the material deforms.
2. Vibration generation
In a ceramic resonator, applying voltage to the ceramic material activates the piezoelectric effect, causing the ceramic to undergo minute deformation. As this deformation is repeated, the ceramic material generates vibrations. The frequency of vibration is determined by the physical properties of the ceramic material (shape, size, material type).
3. Vibration feedback control
Ceramic resonators maintain stable vibration through feedback control of vibration. Specifically, when the ceramic material vibrates, the voltage generated by the vibration is detected by a control circuit. The control circuit uses this voltage signal to reapply the appropriate voltage to the ceramic material. This keeps the vibrations continuous.
4. Signal output
As stable vibration continues, the voltage generated from the ceramic oscillator is output to the outside via the control circuit. This output signal is used as a clock signal at a specific frequency.

Digital clock or smartwatch: Provides a clock signal to display accurate time.
