What is a Digital potentiometer?
A digital potentiometer (English: Digital potentiometer) is an integrated circuit for digitally controlling a variable resistance slider (wiper) that is originally analog controlled. Compared to analog variable resistors, it does not have sliding parts that move mechanically, so it is extremely structurally robust and resistant to failure, so it has the advantage of being able to be used for a long period of time and having high reliability. By mounting it in an analog circuit in combination with a microcomputer, the amount of current can be adjusted automatically while freely controlling the resistance value.
Application of Digital potentiometer
Since the digital potentiometer can be said to be a digitized variable resistor, it is used as an alternative to analog circuits with sliding parts. For example, it will be possible to digitally control what was previously controlled by physical dials, such as adjusting the volume of audio equipment and adjusting the brightness and contrast of displays. With the advancement of IoT for home appliances in recent years, demand for such digital control of analog values is increasing due to compatibility with AI speakers.
