What is a COD meter?
A COD meter is a machine for measuring chemical oxygen demand (COD) in water. * COD: Used as an index to measure organic contamination in water samples. It is mainly used to evaluate the environment in closed water areas such as bays and lakes. The higher the COD value (the higher the oxygen demand of the sample), the more dirty the water. Similar to COD, Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is used as an index of water quality. * BOD: An index showing the amount of oxygen required for microorganisms to decompose organic matter in water, and is used as a reference item for rivers.
Application of COD meter
COD measures the amount of oxygen consumed when organic matter is decomposed with an oxidant (potassium permanganate is often used). The more organic matter, the higher the amount of oxygen required when adding the oxidant, and the higher the COD. The Ministry of the Environment has set the standard and target values for COD, which are the standards for environmental evaluation and wastewater treatment. These standard values differ depending on the type of water area and the intended use of the water, such as seaweed cultivation and industrial water. In addition, COD is expressed in mg / L, but it should be noted that the value differs depending on the measurement method. In Japan, the use of a simple COD meter is permitted depending on the amount of wastewater discharged from the business establishment.
