What is a MLSS meter?

MLSS meter is a device for measuring the concentration of suspended solids (SS) and is mainly used in the water treatment field. Activated sludge method is generally used for sewage treatment. This is a biological treatment process that uses activated sludge. MLSS stands for Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids and refers to the suspended solids contained in the mixture of sewage entering the treatment equipment and sludge being returned. MLSS concentration is a value that measures the amount of microorganisms in sewage treatment equipment, and is an important measurement item along with the amount of dissolved oxygen.

Application of MLSS meter

MLSS meters are used in the water treatment field to manage the functioning of activated sludge processes. MLSS concentration is important as a maintenance standard for treatment facilities using the activated sludge method, and the law stipulates that it must be maintained at an appropriate value. The activated sludge process uses nutrient bacteria to break down organic matter. If the amount of organic matter is excessive compared to the amount of microorganisms, the organic matter cannot be completely decomposed, and bacteria will grow excessively, reducing the floc's ability to settle. Conversely, when there is a lack of organic matter, the floc collapses due to autolysis and sedimentation worsens. By measuring the MLSS concentration and managing it based on the amount of organic matter, you can maximize the functionality of your treatment facility.
