What is a Moisture meter?
A moisture meter is a device that measures the content of water contained in a substance, and supports all measurements in three states: gas, liquid, and solid. Depending on the principle used, the type of moisture meter can be selected from those using the drying method, Karl Fischer method, infrared absorption method, dielectric constant method, etc., but the most common one in the laboratory is the drying method. It uses the Karl Fischer method. Moisture meters are sometimes used to measure the amount of water contained in foods, and since there are many foods for which the drying method is the official method, moisture meters that support these official methods have also been developed.
Application of Moisture meter
Moisture meters are used in a variety of applications, from food to industrial products to wood. In the case of food, the analytical method used depends on its nature, so naturally the equipment used also differs. The official method of drying, which is common in foods, is to use a dryer and a precision balance without a moisture meter, but the official method is to use a moisture meter that includes a dryer and a precision balance. Some can be measured under similar conditions. The official law is stipulated for foods such as rice, wheat, candy balls, potatoes, soybeans, and sugars. For foods that contain a lot of volatile components, the Karl Fischer method, which can measure only water content, is used and is applied as the official method for cooking oil, miso, spices, and dried eggs.
