What is a Plate reader?
A plate reader is an analytical device used to measure chemical or biological reactions in multi-well plates, such as 96-well or 384-well plates. Using various detection technologies, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), fluorometry, and luminescence measurements, the plate reader quantitatively measures the intensity of reactions in each well. Plate readers are primarily used in life sciences, biotechnology, and the pharmaceutical industry to measure parameters such as cell viability, protein expression, DNA/RNA concentration, and enzyme activity. With automated systems, plate readers can analyze multiple samples simultaneously, saving time and labor while producing high reproducibility data. Plate readers typically have the ability to measure absorbance, fluorescence, luminescence, and light scattering, making them versatile for a wide range of measurement needs.
Application of Plate reader
✅ Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
Using a plate reader to quantitatively measure antibody or antigen concentrations in an ELISA assay.
✅ Cell viability assays
Used to assess cell viability through fluorescence measurements after cell culture.
✅ Protein expression analysis
Used to analyze the expression levels of different proteins using fluorescence-based methods.
✅ Drug screening
Utilizing the plate reader to simultaneously test the effects of drugs on multiple samples.
