What is a Melting point instrument?
A melting point measuring instrument is a device that allows a solid sample filled in a capillary tube to be placed in a solution and heated to visually check how the sample changes state. It basically consists of a glass container, a thermometer, a capillary tube, a solvent, a heater, a magnifying glass, etc. Since you can observe the sample while looking at the thermometer, you can evaluate the relationship between the temperature and the sample. Melting point measuring instruments are mainly used for the purpose of measuring melting points and decomposition points. It is also used for sample purity analysis.
Application of Melting point instrument
As the name implies, a melting point measuring instrument can be used to measure the melting point of a solid sample. Besides that, you can observe how the sample shrinks and decomposes. By measuring the melting point of a substance, the heat resistance of the sample can be evaluated. Also, since the melting points of the same substance are almost the same, it is also used when identifying the substance after organic synthesis. On the other hand, if the sample contains impurities, it will deviate from the melting point of the pure substance. You can use this property to check the purity of the reagent.
