What is a Mass spectrometer?
A mass spectrometer (English: Mass Spectrometer, abbreviated as MS) is an analyzer that ionizes molecules in a sample, separates multiple ions generated, and detects each ion separately. The device mainly consists of a sample introduction unit, an ion source, a mass separator, a detector, and so on. There are several types depending on the ionization and mass separation methods, and they are used properly according to the measurement sample and application. Mass spectrometers can mainly identify samples and analyze the components of unknown samples. It is also possible to distinguish and detect isotopes.
Application of Mass spectrometer
The mass analyzer can ionize the target component in the sample and separate and detect the ions according to m / z (mass-to-charge ratio: the value obtained by dividing the mass m of the ions by the number of charges z). Mass spectrometers are mainly used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of measured samples. In particular, it is an indispensable device for research and development, quality control, analysis, inspection, etc. In recent years, it has become possible to ionize proteins with large molecular weights, so it is also used in the life sciences and medical fields.
