What is a spectrofluorometer?

A spectrofluorometer is a device that analyzes the state of molecules and atoms in a substance at the wavelength of light, similar to an ultraviolet / visible spectrophotometer and an infrared spectrophotometer. As the name of the device suggests, the fluorescence emitted by a substance is measured inside the device and shown in the form of a spectrum. It differs from other spectrophotometers in that it can measure light with high sensitivity, high selectivity, and the surrounding environment in which molecules are placed. In addition, since there are few molecules that emit fluorescence, the number of fluorescent molecules that can be bound to the molecule to be measured is limited. This leads to high selectivity.

Application of spectrofluorometer

There are various fields in which the spectrofluorometer can be used. For example, in the field of biochemistry, it is difficult to observe intracellular protein denaturation and cell control by copper ions with an ultraviolet or infrared spectrophotometer. Therefore, the fluorescent molecule is bound to the substance to be measured, and the molecular state and surrounding environment of the substance are analyzed from the spectrum obtained from the fluorescent molecule. Also, in the material field, it is often used to measure quantum yield. Quantum yield is an index showing the luminous efficiency of fluorescent materials such as LEDs, and is used for judgment and quality control for practical use.
