What is a DIAC?
A DIAC (Diode for Alternating Current) is a type of diode, also called a trigger diode. It consists of two diodes connected in parallel in opposite directions. In a normal diode, current flows in the forward direction when a voltage is applied in the forward direction, but in a DIAC current does not flow until a voltage exceeding a certain voltage (breakover voltage) is applied. The DIAC is also a bidirectional diode, characterized by the fact that current flows in the opposite direction when a voltage exceeding the negative breakover voltage is applied.
