What is a Thermal analyzer?
A thermal analysis instrument is used to measure the thermal properties of materials, examining the physical and chemical changes that occur as the temperature changes. Common thermal analysis techniques include Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), and Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA). These techniques provide detailed measurements of a material’s behavior when heated or cooled.
1.Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) measures changes in mass as the material is heated or cooled, helping to analyze the volatility, decomposition, or oxidation reactions of the material.
2.Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) measures the temperature difference between the sample and a reference material, providing insights into phase transitions and thermal reactions.
3.Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA) measures the expansion or contraction of a material as it is subjected to temperature changes, assessing its thermal expansion properties.
These analyses help evaluate the heat resistance and stability of materials and determine the optimal temperature ranges for manufacturing processes.
Application of Thermal analyzer
1.Thermal Analysis of Plastics: Thermal analysis instruments can be used to assess the heat resistance of plastic materials by measuring their deformation temperature and melting point. For example, performing TGA on polypropylene to observe the mass loss of the material as the temperature increases.
2.Thermal Expansion Properties of Metals: TMA (Thermomechanical Analysis) can be used to evaluate the thermal expansion of metals. For instance, examining how steel expands as the temperature rises, and measuring its coefficient of thermal expansion.
