What is a EV charger?

An EV charger is a device used to charge the batteries of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). While EVs can be charged directly from a household outlet, specialized charging stations are required for faster charging. These chargers supply power to the vehicle's battery, extending the driving range of the vehicle.

EV chargers are mainly divided into Level 1 chargers for home use and DC fast chargers for commercial and public charging stations. Level 1 chargers use standard 100V or 200V home electricity to charge the battery over several hours, making them suitable for overnight charging at home or office. In contrast, DC fast chargers use high-output electricity to charge the battery in a short time, making them especially useful for long-distance travel. DC fast chargers can provide up to 80% of the battery's capacity in just 30 minutes.

EV chargers also come with various types of connectors, such as Type 1 (used in North America) and Type 2 (used in Europe), which are important for compatibility between the vehicle and the charger. Additionally, fast chargers may support different standards, such as CCS (Combined Charging System) or CHAdeMO.

To ensure safety, chargers are equipped with multiple protection features to prevent risks like over-voltage, over-current, and temperature abnormalities. Additionally, some chargers come with smart charging functions that allow users to manage charging schedules and optimize energy use.
