What is a Guaiacol (C₆H₄(OH)(OCH₃))?
Guaiacol (C₆H₄(OH)(OCH₃)) is an organic compound derived from phenol, containing both a hydroxyl (–OH) and a methoxy (–OCH₃) group on a benzene ring. It occurs naturally as a product of wood tar or lignin degradation. Guaiacol is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a distinctive smoky, aromatic odor, making it a popular flavoring agent for smoked foods. It is also used as a precursor in pharmaceuticals, notably in the synthesis of expectorants like guaifenesin. Guaiacol has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, but in high concentrations, it may irritate the skin and mucous membranes.
