What is a Glyceric acid (C₃H₆O₄)?
Glyceric acid (C₃H₆O₄) is a three-carbon hydroxy acid containing one carboxyl group (-COOH) and two hydroxyl groups (-OH). It is produced by the oxidation of glycerol (glycerin). Glyceric acid is a colorless solid or viscous liquid at room temperature and is highly soluble in water. Biochemically, it plays a role as an intermediate in metabolic pathways, notably in the Calvin cycle, related to photosynthesis in plants. In industrial applications, glyceric acid is used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics to enhance moisturization and stability. It is also being researched as a biocompatible material for polymers, and as a green chemical due to its low environmental impact and potential from biomass sources.
