What is a Phosphite?

Phosphite refers to a compound derived from phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄), where the phosphorus (P) atom is bonded to oxygen atoms. It is typically represented as R₃PO₃, where R stands for an organic group or hydrogen, and contains the phosphite ion (PO₃³⁻). Phosphites are known for their redox properties, meaning they participate in oxidation-reduction reactions, and they are commonly used in various industries such as agriculture and chemicals.

Unlike phosphate (PO₄³⁻), phosphites have a different oxidation state of phosphorus, which gives them distinct chemical characteristics.
