What is a Alginate?
Alginate is a polysaccharide obtained from brown seaweeds, with the chemical formula (C6H7NaO6)n. It is widely used in various industries, including food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and industrial applications. In the food industry, alginate is commonly used as a gelling agent and thickener, and is found in products like ice cream, yogurt, and fruit juices. Alginate has the ability to form a gel-like substance when it reacts with calcium ions, which enhances the texture of food products. In the pharmaceutical industry, sodium alginate is sometimes used to treat excessive stomach acid. Alginate is also highly biocompatible, making it suitable for wound healing and drug delivery systems.
On the downside, alginate can be difficult to digest, and excessive intake may cause bloating and discomfort in the abdomen.
